Amy + Tom’s Rustic Wedding
I really want to say something about how Amy and Tom are the truest of high school sweethearts. I want to say something about how, when they first saw each other on their wedding day, the emotion that overwhelmed them hit everyone watching like a train. I want to say how Gus played the integral role of adorable comic relief in the ceremony… but I think Amy said it all in her vows. I asked her to email them to me afterward because they were just that good. Here, have a look for yourself…
Thomas… 8 years ago, in university I bookmarked a letter in a textbook I was reading that Jean de Coras wrote to his wife in 1553 knowing that I wanted to read it to you on our wedding day. It read: “Never husband present or absent was so cherished and loved by a wife as you are and will be. I beg you believe that day and night at every hour and minute I dream of you, I desire you, and love you so much that without you, I don’t exist”.
Tom, you have taught me the true meaning of friendship, love, and partnership.
As a medieval scholar I have studied endlessly about this mysterious and fantastical thing called chivalry, but you…you have shown me that chivalry is real. You are the romantic prince that the fairy tales of my childhood promised me. And Gus is your tiny, chubby, wrinkly-faced steed. I won’t call you the man of my dreams because no dream has ever been this wonderful.
I’m so thankful to your beautiful mother for raising the best man I have ever met who respects me as a partner, knows the importance of hard work in life and love, who is kind and patient and I promise to be the very best partner to you that I can possibly be. I promise to be patient with you as you are with me as we navigate this crazy life together and continue to find ourselves and our place in this world. I promise to love you unconditionally for every single day of the rest of my life because I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I promise to laugh with you at the best, worst and most awkward and inappropriate times. I promise to see the entire world with you in time. I promise to co-parent this pug with you the best way we know how. I promise to keep learning with you, about you, about everything. I promise to be your canoeing and camping partner for life. I will be your biggest supporter and best friend. I vow that when we face what trials will surely come our way, I will only hold your hand tighter, hug you closer, and be an ear when we need to talk or share the silence with you when we don’t. As the saying goes, I vow to love you whether rich or in poverty, because who, being loved, is poor.
You are the Chewy to my Han. The Sam to my Frodo. The Watson to my Sherlock. The Hodor to my Hodor. You are the Beren to my Luthien. To quote our favourite novel: Tom – You can trust me to stick to you through thick and thin, to the end. And you can trust me to keep any secret of yours, closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust me to let you face trouble alone.
Tom,
Thank you for finding something special enough within this flawed but loving high school sweetheart of yours to want to dedicate the rest of your life to making me smile, kissing me on the forehead, taking my breath away, and sweeping me off my feet. I can conquer the world with one hand as long as you are holding the other. I am excited to spend the rest of my life with you and that forever can’t start soon enough! I would rather share one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of the world alone.
